MAT, MS, and MA Degree Programs

Our master’s degree programs were developed specifically for students who aspire to be among the best secondary school teachers in their field. Our graduate students master both their area of academic concentration and a variety of teaching methods.
  • MAT: primarily for those with no prior teaching certification. Students graduate with Initial Certification and the master’s degree necessary for Professional Certification. Full-time students typically complete the program in one calendar year. Part-time students take two to three calendar years.

The MAT program also is a good fit for students who have attained Initial Certification as undergraduates and are pursuing the master’s required for Professional Certification. The program provides these students with advanced teaching skills and additional classroom experience under the guidance of master teachers.

  • Accelerated MAT: for Union College undergraduates who wish to enter teaching as a profession. Students with good GPAS complete two MAT prerequisites as part of their undergraduate coursework. They earn their bachelor’s degree from Union as seniors in June and begin the full-time MAT program immediately that summer. Students typically complete the program in one calendar year. Courses that double-count as undergraduate and graduate courses are available to Union College graduates for up to five years after graduation.

  • CORE MAT: primarily for career changers who already have at least a master’s degree in their area of certification. Since the master’s fulfills the requirement for Professional Certification, the CORE MAT program focuses on the pedagogy coursework necessary for Initial Certification. Most students complete this program in one calendar year.

  • MS for Teachers of Mathematics and Science: for practicing teachers in math, science, and technology who have Initial Certification and are seeking a master’s degree for Professional Certification. This program focuses primarily on increasing subject matter expertise. Students typically attend part time and complete the program in two to three calendar years.

  • MA in English, MA in History, and MA in English and History: for graduate students—especially those teaching English and/or history in grades 7-12—who want to improve their core content knowledge. The MA program is an excellent option for teachers who already have Initial Certification and need a master’s degree for Professional Certification, and for teachers seeking professional development in academic content to fulfill the 175-hour professional development mandate. The program also is designed for individuals seeking a master’s degree in an academic discipline for professional reasons (such as private school teaching or library, museum, or research work), and for individuals who are preparing for doctoral study.

  • Complete two Complementary Degrees:
Union Graduate College School of Education also offers students the opportunity to complete two complementary graduate degrees that enable students to increase their content knowledge, marketability and potentially their teaching salary. These combined degrees include:

    • Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Arts in English
    • Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Arts in History
    • Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Arts in English & History
    • Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Science in Mathematics, Science & Technology

The degrees can be completed in either order. A student pursuing both degrees full time could complete them in two calendar years.

Students typically attend part time and complete the program in two to three calendar years. Full-time students can complete the program in one calendar year.

Graduate school academic concentrations include but are not limited to: Biology, Chemistry, Chinese, English, French, Geology (Earth Science), German, Greek, History (Social Studies), Latin, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science (Social Studies), Technology and Spanish.
